Distinction between Bronsted and Lewis

Postby Shannonhoang » Sun Nov 27, 2016 7:05 pm

Why are there two different ways to classify acids and bases (Bronsted and Lewis)? For instance, what is the distinction between a Bronsted base and a lewis acid?

I believe Bronsted acids and bases concern protons, while Lewis acids and bases concern electrons. A Bronsted base will accept a proton while a Lewis acid will accept an electron pair.

Bronsted acids and bases only deal with protons--acids lose protons whereas bases gain protons. Lewis acids and bases deal with electrons--acids accept electrons and bases donate electrons.
