Why are we using the Bronsted acid and base definition as opposed to the Lewis one? Will we be expected to calculations with the Lewis definition as well?

I found this on the bottom of page 464:

"In Fundamentals, Section J, we saw that an Arrhenius acid is a compound that produces hydronium ions in water and an Arrhenius base is a compound that produces hydroxide ions in water. The Brønsted definition is more general because it includes the possibility that an ion is an acid (an option not allowed by the Arrhenius definition)."
