Acids and Bases

Postby LeAirraBullingor2k » Fri Nov 29, 2019 6:21 pm

When determining whether a molecule will be an acid or a base in water, do we draw the structure out to help us figure it out? Or do we just have to be familiar with common acids and bases to know the answer?

Usually acids have H+ ions that will dissociate, but in order to be 100% sure about any polar or non polar characteristics, draw the structure.

In order to determine which molecule is an acid or base is examine which one has H+ ions (acidic) while the other has OH- (basic).

For Lewis acids and bases, it would be helpful to draw the structures to see whether the molecule has a lone pair that it can donate.
