Acidic Strength

Postby salvadorramos3k » Fri Dec 06, 2019 12:06 am

Why is HClO2 stronger than HBrO2 even though they have the same electronegativity and Br is bigger than Cl?

HClO2 is a stronger acid than HBrO2 because Cl is more electronegative (EN: 3.0) than Br (EN: 2.8).

Cl is more electronegative than Br, so it can withdraw electrons from the O-H bond and it becomes easier to remove H+.

Remember, electronegativity increases going up the periodic table. Since Cl is above Br, Cl is more electronegative.
