What is the difference between Bronsted and Arrhenius acids and bases?

The main difference between Bronsted and Arrhenius acids and bases is that Arrhenius' definition is specific to aqueous solvents (aka water). He defined an acid as a compound that contains hydrogen and reacts with water to form hydrogen ions and a base as a compound that produces hydroxide ions in water. When considering nonaqueous solvents, Bronsted developed the following definitions: an acid is a proton donor, and a base is a proton acceptor. I hope this answers your question. Section J1 in the textbook goes into more detail about the two, and I found it really helpful.
