Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
How can I identify a biological compound as a strong base or a weak base?

Hi,
In this class, I think you are just supposed to memorize them from the list in the book.

I'm also curious if we need to be able to calculate this or if we need to just memorize them like Omar said.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
I'm pretty confident that it's memorization. Lavelle said that generally weak bases are nitrogen containing compounds, and one sure way to know what one is is if a Kb value is provided.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
In the textbook, there is a list of strong bases and acids to know, and every other acid/base not listed there would be considered weak.

Hello!
Like everyone said, there's a list on strong acids and bases that you have to memorize. You can find it in the book. Hope this helps!

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
If we have to memorize this, are there any tricks that would help us to identify strong vs weak bases?
Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
It is easiest to just memorize the strong acid and bases and assume the rest are weak.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
Memorize the strong acids and bases. Once you know that, then anything that isn't on the list is a weak acid or base. The homework has some problems similar to that and I think also shows you the list too.

You can just memorize the strong bases listed in the textbook, and all other bases are considered weak.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
There is a list of strong bases (and also strong acids) that we just need to memorize.
Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
Here are a few extra tips:
- Acids tend to start with H or end in -COOH
- Strong bases tend to contain a metal cation and OH
- Weak bases tend to contain Nitrogen
**Always identify the acids first and then move onto the bases**

Also, note that the strong acids and bases are listed in order from strongest --> weakest in the chempendix: https://sites.google.com/site/chempendi ... cids-bases

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
You should memorize the list of strong bases from the textbook. All others are considered to be weak bases. The same thing applies to acids.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
You just have to memorize the list of strong bases unfortunately, to calculate would require a lot more complicated chemistry that we haven't learned yet

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
There are 6 we need to memorize! Lithium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, strontium hydroxide, barium hydroxide.

Re: Identifying Strong vs. Weak Bases
Hi! Strong bases usually include a metal cation and an OH- while weak bases tend to include nitrogen. I would recommend memorizing the list of strong bases in the textbook for the final!
