Achieve W10 #11

Postby EriMizuguchi2K » Sun Nov 28, 2021 2:16 pm

Could someone help me with question 11 on the week 10 achieve homework?

The question is:
Arrange these oxoacids (oxyacids) according to acid strength.
HIO, HClO, HBrO

When looking at oxoacids with the halogen group you want to look at electronegativity trends. The bond will look like A - O - H (A being the Halogen). When the Halogen has a lot stronger of electronegativity and pulling power, it will be able to pull the electrons towards it and polarize the hydrogen bond. Once this hydrogen bond is weaker it is able to release the H atom easier which then deprotonates it. With more H+ released in a solution, this will be a stronger acid. Therefore, the order from weakest to strongest would be HIO, HBrO, and HClO. HClO will be most acidic because the Cl is more electronegative.

Atoms that are more electronegative shift the electron density of the hydrogen bond and make it weaker. Weaker hydrogen bonds mean stronger acids, so the compounds with more electronegative atoms make stronger acids. You can look at the periodic table to see the electronegativity trend (increases left to right, and increases up). Cl is the most electronegative so HClO will be the strongest, followed by HBrO, and then HIO!

The more closely bonded the central atom is to O, the more polarized the O-H bond will be and thus the more acidic the compound will be. Since Cl is the most electronegative, then Br, and then I, the oxacids will arrange: HClO, HBrO, HIO, in order from most to least acidic.

If an element has high electronegativity, can we always assume that it will make a weak acid?

Stronger acids are those with more electronegative atoms. HIO, HBrO, and HClO would be in the order of weakest to strongest. Because Cl is more electronegative, HClO will be the most acidic.

To determine acid strength you have to observe the electronegativity of atom bonded to O. If the bond is stronger (higher electronegativity) you will get a stronger dipole moment and a more acidic compound as a result. This means, based on electronegativity, from the strongest to weakest acid would be in the order of HClO, HBrO, and HIO.
