Strength of acids/bases

Postby Natalie Gibson 1c » Mon Nov 29, 2021 11:32 pm

Does temperature affect the relative strength of an acid/base? I noticed in week 10 HW on achieve that the problems will state "at 25 deg C", but what if the conditions are different? What other factors affect the strength of acids/bases?

Generally, increasing temperature causes an increase in acidity/a decrease in pH. 25 degrees Celsius is used in most of these problems because it is the standard room temperature, so I'm guessing it's only included in the problem for the sake of standardization. The pressure of a solution can also affect its pH, but I'm not sure if we need to know these details since they haven't been mentioned in lecture.

25 degrees Celsius is usually where all the formulas and constants are considered to be at. Since its given in the problem, it is just saying that the scenario is at standard temperature so you can use standard formulas/pH conversions.
