Amphiprotic vs. Amphoteric

Postby Sasha Gladkikh 2A » Tue Nov 30, 2021 11:48 pm

What is the difference between amphiprotic and amphoteric? Are the two terms used interchangeably?

Amphiprotic means a compound can accept and donate protons, while amphoteric means a compound can act as an acid or base. Amphiprotic is a more specific definition, more applying to the Bronstead Lowry definition of acids and bases. All amphiprotic compounds are amphoteric but not all amphoteric compounds are amphiprotic.
