Protonation

Postby Tawny Vu 1A » Wed Dec 01, 2021 11:01 pm

What does it mean to be protonated? Dr.Lavelle uses this term many times in lecture but I wasn't sure if it was ever defined or explained and it's confusing my understanding. Can someone explain?

Hi,
I believe it simply means that a molecule, atom, or ion gains a H+ ion.

Hi! Additionally, when an acid molecule is in a solution, when the pH of the solution is less than the pKa of the molecule, the acid is said to be protonated and is an acidic solution. When the pH of the solution is less than the pKa of the molecule, the acid is de-protonated or a basic solution. Hope this helps!

Protonated just means that a proton is transferred to a molecule or atom.

I believe it means when a molecule accepts a proton and deprotonated means the opposite (losing a proton).

Protonation means that an atom or molecule accepts a proton H+

Protonation means that a species has accepted an H+.
