Bronsted Vs Lewis Acids and Bases

Postby Will Harvey 1B » Wed Dec 01, 2021 11:01 pm

Can anyone explain the difference between a Lewis acid/base and a Bronsted acid/base. I thought that lewis was about accepting/donating electrons while bronsted was about donating/accepting protons. If something is a Lewis acid does that automatically mean that it is also a bronsted acid or is bronsted acid only used in a specific case?

So yes, Bronsted Acid/base focuses on the movement of a proton while Lewis Acid/Base focuses on the movement of an electron. All Bronsted Acids are Lewis acids but not vice versa.
