Acid vs Base
How do you determine whether an acid or base is weak or strong w/o having to calculate pH? Or are we expected to memorize the list of strong/weak acids and bases that's referred to in the Achieve HW Week 10?

Re: Acid vs Base
I think the easiest way is definitely just to memorize the list given to us on the achieve. However, there are a few things that can help you remember. For example, for the strong bases, usually a group 1 or group 2 metal with a hydroxide group will be a strong base.
I hope that helps!

Re: Acid vs Base
Yea I agree, memorize the strong acid list for sure. Anything that is not a strong acid or base is automatically a weak acid/base

Re: Acid vs Base
The easiest way is to memorize the list of strong acids and bases, and know that any other acids and bases you see will be weak. As a general rule of thumb, weak acids will have strong HA bonds.

Re: Acid vs Base
Memorizing the list of strong acids and bases will be helpful as we know that any other acid or base will be a weak base or acid.

I believe we are expected to memorize the list of strong acids and bases. For strong acids the acronym one of the UAs told me is "SO I BRought NO CLean CLOthes" so that can hopefully help you memorize

Re: Acid vs Base
There is a list that includes all the known strong acids and bases. For acids its mostly memorization, for bases, if I remember correctly its the group 1 and 2 elements combined with OH (I may be wrong on that one). Anything else is either a weak acid or a weak base.
Hope this helps!!!

I say it's easier to memorize. However, I would know why it's a stronger/weaker acid/base.

Re: Acid vs Base
As people have mentioned, it is best to memorize the list of strong acids and bases. The acids and bases not found on that list are (typically) considered weak.

I think that we're expected to memorize the list of strong/weak acids. One way to memorize strong acids is through the acronym, "SO I BRought NO Clean CLOthes" and for bases, it's Group I and II metal hydroxides and oxides. Hope this helps!

A list of strong/weak acids and bases was provided to us on achieve! Unfortunately, the only way to distinguish between each is to memorize the list.

Personally, I think it would be most helpful to memorize the list given on strong and weak acids.

Re: Acid vs Base
I reccomend memorizing the list of strong acids which are: HCl, HBr, HI, HClO3, HClO4, H2SO4, HNO3. For bases its generally any oxide and hydroxide with group 1 and 2 ions.

Re: Acid vs Base
I believe that memorizing them is the easiest way; we can use structures to recognize weak acids and weak bases. Weak acids often contain the carboxyl group -COOH wherease weak bases often contain the ammine group (or basically a N with a lone pair).
