Amphoteric Compounds

Postby Lily Dabrowski 2G » Thu Dec 02, 2021 8:52 pm

Is it safe to assume that if a compound is amphoteric, it is a weak acid/base? Or does each situation vary? Looking at the example of water combined with itself, it is amphoteric and it would be weak as either an acid or base, just wondering if that applies to all amphoteric compounds.

You probably don't want to assume that for amphoteric compounds. You're better off drawing the structure of the compound and trying to judge from there whether it's a weak acid or base.
