Is OH- a strong base?

Can anyone explain why OH- is a strong base? I'm a bit confused since OH- and O2- aren't listed as strong bases, but they supposedly are.

What makes OH- stronger is the oxygen in hydroxide ion is a better proton (H+) acceptor than the oxygen in water. This is because the electron density in the oxygen in the hydroxide ion is higher. The oxygen atom in hydroxide is sharing fewer of its electron pairs which makes is more negative.

OH- by itself is not a strong base, but OH- compounds can be strong bases. It may be helpful to look at this list of strong bases:

LiOH
NaOH
KOH
Ca(OH)2
RbOH
Sr(OH)2
CsOH
Ba(OH)2

A Brønsted–Lowry base is a proton acceptor. So since OH- is a proton acceptor, its a base. In the reaction OH- + H+ --> H2O, the OH- accepts a proton to form water.

Compounds that contain OH- are often strong bases because OH is a proton acceptor that forms H20 when it gains a proton.
