Proton acceptor

Postby VZX » Sat Dec 04, 2021 4:22 pm

With multiple lone pairs present in a molecule by looking at the lewis structure, how do you determine which ones can accept a proton and which ones don't?

Hello! I could be wrong, but I think any lone pair has the ability to accept a proton.

I agree, I believe that all lone pairs can accept a proton too.

The lone pairs can all accept electrons.

An exception is h2o where the oxygen has two lone pairs, because the size of the oxygen is too small to accept more than one proton.

The lone pairs in the lewis structure should all be able to accept a proton!

lone pairs in a Lewis Structure are able to accept that proton. When accepting the proton it is considered a Bronsted Base

Hello!
I believe that all lone pairs in a molecule can accept a proton! I attached a visual below! I hope this helps!
