Delocalization and Stability

Postby Claire_Sabol_2G » Sun Dec 05, 2021 9:05 am

What is it about delocalization/resonance that stabilizes an anion in a strong acid?

When the electrons are delocalized, the anion won't have as strong of a partial negative/positive charge to any specific side. Thus, they are less likely to give up a H+ because the negative partial charge on the other side of the molecule isn't as strong as it could be.
