Can Weak Acids Create Alkaline Solutions

Postby 606454082 » Thu Dec 05, 2024 3:29 am

We know that salts containing the conjugate base of a weak acid can raise the pH by removing protons from water and generating OH-. This means weak acids create less acidic solutions, but can they also create alkaline solutions due to the influx of OH-?

If there is nothing but an acid in the solution, then the pH will be less than 7. There will be hydroxide atoms as hydroxide atoms and hydronium atoms are inversely related by the Kw of water. However, an acid will not be creating and giving off hydroxide ions.
