Weak vs. strong Acids and chemical rxns

Postby Emma Wruck 2A » Sun Jan 21, 2024 3:04 pm

If we see that a chemical reaction only has a forward arrow (is not dynamic and going back and forth because it is 100% dissociating), is it okay to assume that if there is an acid/base involve that they would be a strong acid/base? Or do we have to consider other factors?

I would assume so! A forward arrow helps indicate that strong acids dissociate completely in solution, and if it's weak, do the double arrows. Sometimes in the HW problems however there are double arrows indicated.

I agree with Daphnie that it usually implies a strong acid dissociating completely, but I still think that you should be cautious just in case it is an error of using a single arrow instead of double.
