weak conjugate bases/acids

Postby Joanna Jin 1J » Thu Jan 25, 2024 9:53 pm

How do weak conjugate bases/acids affect whether the salt is overall basic, acidic, or neutral?

The pH of a salt solution is determined by the strengths of the original acid and base. Salts from strong acids and weak bases are acidic, salts from weak acids and strong bases are basic, and salts from strong acids and strong bases are neutral.

I like to think of the pH of a salt being the same as whatever has the strongest presence. If there is a strong acid, then the salt will be acidic, and if there is a weak base, the salt will be basic. Having a cation and an anion as a strong base and acid will make the salt neutral as the strength of both will cancel each other out.

the presence of weak conjugate acids and bases in a salt solution can lead to the hydrolysis of the salt ions, resulting in the solution being acidic, basic, or neutral, depending on the specific properties of the acid and base involved.
