Postby Emma Wruck 2A » Tue Jan 30, 2024 4:48 pm

Can the terms protonation and dissociation be used interchangeably?

No. Protonation means gaining a proton and dissociation means losing a proton.

No, because protonation refers to the gaining of a proton, whereas dissociation relates to an acid/base separating into its cations and anions. If you meant deprotonation, they still aren't exactly the same thing because deprotonation refers to an ionic compound losing/giving away a proton, meaning it is a more specific type of dissociation.
