strong and weak acids and bases

Postby Belle Calforda3f » Tue Dec 05, 2017 12:28 pm

Are weak acids and bases the only acids and bases that have conjugates because they do not ionize completely? Or do strong acids and bases have conjugates as well?

Both strong acid/bases and weak acids/bases have conjugates. If the acid/base is strong that means its conjugate is weak, and if the acid/base is weak, it means the conjugate is strong. So the conjugate of HCl is Cl- which is a weak conjugate base, and CH3COOH has a strong conjugate base, CH3COO-

It can apply to any acid-base reaction, you're basically just looking for what gave and took away the proton in the same molecule.
