Stabilizing Conjugate Bases

Postby veneziaramirez 3I » Fri Dec 08, 2017 7:14 pm

What can stabilize a base? How can we tell if it’s stabilized?

When an acid donates its proton, it generally forms an anionic (negatively charged) conjugate base. Sometimes, that conjugate base might have one or more electronegative atoms attached that help withdraw or delocalize the negative formal charge. Electron delocalization adds stability.
