Weak Acid, Strong Base

Postby Manya Kidambi 3I » Mon Dec 03, 2018 11:19 pm

Why is it that the conjugate base of a weak acid is a strong base?

The weaker that an acid is, the stronger the conjugate base is because: a strong Bronsted acid wants to give up its protons. If it gives the proton away, it wouldn't make sense for the resulting compound to want it back (which would be the case for a strong conjugate base). This would basically mean the base is re-associating itself with a hydrogen proton, which doesn't make any sense.
