Strong acids

Postby Gisela F Ramirez 2H » Sat Dec 08, 2018 9:37 pm

When being asked to choose the stronger acid, you first look at the bond length and, if that is not comparable you look at the conjugate base right? Does a strong conjugate base mean a stronger acid? Or is it a weak conjugate base that means a stronger acid?

Longer bond lengths means that the bonds are weaker and the acids are stronger. Strong acids have weak conjugate bases.

When being asked to choose the stronger base, you should also consider the resulting anion stability.
