Stability of Conjugate Base

How does the stability of a conjugate base, determine if an acid or base is stronger or weaker?

If a conjugate base is more stable, the acid is more likely to donate a proton. So the more stable the conjugate base, the stronger the acid (because it'll donate a proton a lot easier).

The more stable, the more likely an acid will donate its proton. If the conjugate base is more stable, the stronger the acid.

A main reason for stability is attributed to resonance.

The stability of the conjugate base is attributed to resonance and electron withdrawing. You can think about strength in two ways: proton donating as previous comments have said, or because the more stable a conjugate base is, the less likely it will actually act as a base and accept a proton, forming the molecule again (reversing the reaction). For example, since Cl- is a weak conjugate base of HCl, it won't readily accept protons to from HCl; this is why HCl completely ionizes.

Usually, if the conjugate base is more stable, the resulting acid will be stronger.
