### Acids and Bases

when do you use equilibrium arrows, for an acid-base reaction or for an acid or a base reacting with water?

### Re: Acids and Bases

Equilibrium arrows are used when the acid or base is weak because they are not completely dissociated, so the reaction will go back and forth. On the other hand, strong acids and bases would dissociate completely, so there would only be an arrow going in one direction.

I remember Dr. Lavelle still used the equilibrium arrows for a reaction with a strong acid in water though. I can't remember what he said when he explained why.

### Re: Acids and Bases

Technically all reactions should have equilibrium arrows. However, for strong acids and bases, the reverse arrow is so small that it is omitted

### Re: Acids and Bases

Reactions dealing with weak acids or bases use equilibrium arrows since they are not completely dissociated. On the other hand, in the case of strong acids and bases, complete dissociation allows for reactions to go in just one forward direction where the acid or base fully ionizes.

### Re: Acids and Bases

every reaction involving acids and/or bases have the equilibrium arrows but the strong acids and bases completely dissociate and do not go to its original form so the equilibrium arrow does not work. For weak acids and bases, the equilibrium arrows are more emphasized as they can reverse back to its original forms.

To add on, you can tell if the reaction involves a weak/strong acid/base by checking if there is a single/double equilibrium arrow.

### Re: Acids and Bases

Equilibrium arrows are used in reactions in which weak acids and bases are involved since they do not dissociate completely.

### Re: Acids and Bases

More generally, equilibrium arrows are used whenever there is an equilibrium present. This can be in reactions involving acids and bases, or just any reaction in general that can have an equilibrium such as the equilibrium between NO2 and N2O4.

You would use arrows for weak reactions because they are not completely dissociated.

### Re: Acids and Bases

I think for both, but you'd only really need them for weak reactions
