Strength of Conjugate Acids and Bases

Postby Tracey Tran 3I » Sun Dec 01, 2019 2:34 am

Why are conjugate bases of strong acids weak?

strong acids are completely deprotonated in water, and donates that proton so easily to the conjugate base which means that there's no need for the conjugate base to have any pull on the proton, thus making it weak

Similarly, conjugate acids of strong bases are weak.

This can be determined through whether or not complete dissociation occurs in water. Strong acids and bases completely dissociate while weak acids partially dissociate.
