Draw the Lewis structure of boric acid, B(OH)3. (a) Is resonance important for its description? (b) The proton transfer equilibrium for boric acid is given in a footnote to Table 6C.1. In that reaction does boric acid act as a Lewis acid, a Lewis base, or neither? Justify your answer by using Lewis structures of boric acid and its conjugate base.

I understand how to draw the lewis structure for this, but could someone explain the resonance part and what the conjugate base would look like? Wouldn't the conjugate base be H2BO3- because it is the result of the acid donating the proton?

B(OH)3 has no resonance because all the bonds are the same; therefore, there are no possible other structures (no double bonds to exchange with single bonds for example). Next, below the table it indicated that the conjugate would actually be B(OH)4 so the result would be just an additional OH single bonded to B. Lastly, B(OH)3 would be a Lewis acid because it is accepting an electron pair (OH-).
