H-F in conjugate bases

Postby Katie Bart 1I » Tue Dec 03, 2019 10:47 am

Why is H-F the only anion in the halogen species that makes the conjugate base of a weak acid alkaline?

Since the other halogen based acids are much stronger than HF (due to weaker bonds between hydrogen and the halogen), they would not be strong conjugate bases. HF would be the only halogen based acid that is a strong conjugate base for a weaker acid.

The other conjugate bases are not as strong, meaning they can not produce the same outcome as H-F can.

H-F is a very weak acid, which means its conjugate base is strong.
