How do you determine what the conj. acid and bases are?

The conjugate base of an acid is the form the acid takes after giving up a proton (H). Additionally, a conjugate acid of a base is the form a base takes after gaining a proton (H).

for example: CH3CO2H is an Acid and CH3CO2- is its conjugate base, because it lost a proton

H2O becoming H3O+ (hydronium) is an example of a base (H2O) and its conjugate acid (H3O+)

H2O gained a proton to become H3O which is its a conjugate acid.

A conjugate base of an acid is the species remaining when an acid donates a proton. For example, the conjugate base of HCN would be CN-. A conjugate acid of a base is the species remaining when the acid donates a proton. For example, the conjugate acid of NH3 would be NH4+.
