Alkaline

Postby ALee_1J » Mon Dec 07, 2020 2:42 pm

Is the word alkaline synonymous to basic? ie. when you say a solution is more alkaline, it's more basic?

I believe so.
Alkaline solutions refers to a mixture of base solids dissolved in water (from the internet).

I think they're very similar, so when someone says that something is alkaline you can assume they're saying it's basic. Alkaline just means something with a pH greater than seven.

Yes! If a solution is alkaline, it means it is basic and therefore a pH higher than 7. Hope this helps!

Yes, an alkaline solution is referring to a basic solution, meaning it has a pH>7 and contains more hydroxide ions than hydronium ions,

I think it is right to say that an alkaline solution/compound is the same as a basic solution/compound. However, an ALKALI is a base (that dissolves in water).
Not all bases are alkali but all alkali is base.

Yes you're correct! Alkaline does mean basic, at least in the context of this course.
