### Formula for Conjugate Acids & Bases

For determining the formula of the conjugate acid or base, is the most reliable method to add a H+ for the conjugate acid, and take away a H+ for the conjugate base, and why?

Yes, conjugate acid-base pairs always differ by 1 proton. Since a Bronsted base is a proton acceptor, its conjugate acid would have an added H+. Since a Bronsted acid is a proton donor, its conjugate base would have 1 less H+.

Also make sure you consider charge. If a base is neutral, its conjugate acid will be + charged. If a base is -, its conjugate acid will be neutral, and so on.
