How do you find formulas for conjugate bases and acids?

Re: Finding formulas for conjugate bases and acids
For a generic weak acid + water equation like AH + H2O ↔ A− + H3O+, AH is the acid, and A- is the conjugate base (A- can act as a weak base by "stealing" H+ from water which leaves behind OH-). So, if we were trying to find the conjugate base of acetic acid the equation would be CH₃COOH (acid) + H2O ↔ CH3COO-(conjugate base) + H3O+ so CH3COO-, the acetate anion, is the conjugate base.

Re: Finding formulas for conjugate bases and acids
When thinking about how to find these formulas, it's good to keep in mind that acids are electron acceptors and that bases are electron donors. This might help when finding the subsequent formulas for each! This helps me remember what part to take on and off.

The conjugate base is a chemical compound formed when an acid donates a proton to a base (in other words, one less proton). Conjugate acid is a chemical compound formed when a base accepts a proton from an acid (one more proton).
For example H2NO2 and HNO2 (-) are conjugate base-acid pairs as they have a difference of a proton.

Generally, you add a H for conjugate acids and decrease one H for conjugate bases.

For Acids add H and add a proton.
For Bases take out an H and take out a proton.

Re: Finding formulas for conjugate bases and acids
In general, to find the conjugate base we remove an H+ ion and to find the conjugate acid we add an H+ ion.
