Conjugate base of H2SO4

Postby Grace Chen 3F » Sat Dec 04, 2021 1:15 am

If we were asked about the conjugate base of H2SO4, should we write HSO4- or SO4 2-?

It would be HSO4-, as you only remove one proton!

To find the conjugate base, you take away an H+ so it would be HSO4-. It wouldn't be 2- since you take away a positive charge.

When you take away the one proton you would get HSO4-

It would be HSO4- because an acid donates one proton at a time to form a conjugate base

Hi,

The way we would be able to identify a conjugate base is if it has only one proton was removed from it in the acidic form. So, by using that definition the conjugate base of the H2SO4 acid would be HSO4-.
