Determining strong acids vs. strong bases

Postby claireselleck_3E » Sat Dec 04, 2021 4:54 pm

I cannot remember if this was specified or not, but will we have to memorize the list of strong acids and strong bases. It's not a terribly long list, and I understand how to recognize an acid and how to differentiate from a base. I'm more so wondering if it was something encouraged or suggested that we memorize them for the final

I'm not sure of Professor Lavelle had mentioned anything but while doing the Achieve homework it was encouraged to memorize the list of strong acids and bases.

To my knowledge, we just need to know those strong acids that we have talked about in class, such as HCl, HBr, HI, HClO3, HClO4. Another 2 that always appear are HNO3 and H2SO4.
You can infer the strength of acid from them.
For strong bases, look for Group 1 or 2 metal oxide or hydroxide.

Hope this helps.

Yes that is incredibly helpful! Thank you!

One way to memorize the strong acids which are HCl, HBr, HI, HNO3, HClO3, HCLO4, H2SO4 is with the following phrase: SO I BRought NO CLean CLOthes. As you can see, the letters that are capitalized are the substances that are strong acids when paired with hydrogen.

There was a tip in the achieve HW that said that acid formulas tend to start with H, weak bases tend to contain N, and strong bases often contain a metal cation and OH.

We also know that metal oxides are acidic, nonmetal oxides are basic, and metalloid oxides are amphoteric. Hopefully this is also helpful but memorizing seems like the best way to know them.
