Can Strong Acids have Conjugate Bases?

Postby Brandon Achugbue 3H » Sat Dec 04, 2021 5:51 pm

The resulting anion of a strong acid must be stable, so does that mean a strong acid will never form a conjugate base (anion that can go on to give off a proton)? Or are there conjugate bases of strong acids that are stable, yet can still go on to react with their extra H protons given the right circumstances?

I'm inclined to think that conjugate bases are only possible (or only matter to us) when observing relative strength of weak acids.

Hi!

Technically, strong acids can form conjugate bases, but those conjugates are incredibly, incredibly weak to the point where their basic properties are deemed negligible. In my other chem classes I learned about there being 2 types of conjugates, strong conjugates(conjugates of weak acids/bases) and weak conjugates(conjugates of strong acids/bases). Relative strength goes from strong > (strong) conjugate > weak > weak conjugate.

Hope this helps! ^^

Strong acids form conjugate bases however they are so weak that they do not even affect the pH of the solution.

The conjugate bases of strong acids are extremely weak, which is why they're not really considered when deciding whether a salt would be basic or acidic in an aqueous solution.

Strong acids can form conjugate bases. However, they are extremely weak and therefore, do not influence pH.

Yes, strong acids have weak conjugate bases and, on the other hand, weak acids will have strong conjugate bases.

Hi! Strong acids have weak conjugate bases and therefore strong bases have weak conjugate acids!

Hi! Strong acids can have conjugate bases, but these bases tend to incredibly weak. These weak conjugate bases usually are not considered while calculating pH.

Yes, strong acids do have conjugate bases. However, they are generally so weak that they do not impact the pH of the solution.

Hi,

Yes strong acids can have conjugate bases. The conjugate base, however, will be significantly weaker in comparison to the acid.

conjugate bases always form but it is just a matter of how string they are. IN the case of strong acids they are very weak and their presence is so small that it will not effect the ph.

After an acid transfers its proton, the resulting anion can accept a proton and be classified as a base. Therefore, all acids form conjugate bases, including strong acid. It is just that the extent to which conjugate bases of strong acids can accept a proton is so small that it is negligible.

Strong acids can have conjugate bases. For example, the conjugate base of the strong acid HCl is Cl-. However, it's important to note that the conjugate bases of strong acids are so weak that they will have little to no effect on the pH of a solution. This can be seen by Cl-.

Yes! Strong acids can have conjugate bases but they are such weak bases that they are unable to change the pH of a solution. For example, HBr is a strong acid but the conjugate base Br- is very weak.

Strong acids and bases have weak conjugates. They are so weak to the point where they are pH neutral and don't affect the pH of the solution as a whole.

Consider HCl, the resulting anion of dissociation, Cl- is incredibly stable so there is no conjugate base in terms of this resulting anion, as goes for the rest of the strong acids.

Hi! Strong acids also have conjugate bases but due to the conjugate seesaw, the stronger the acid, the weaker its conjugate base. As a result, the conjugate bases of strong acids are really weak and barely affect the pH meaning they are negligible. Hope that helps!

Strong acids can form conjugate bases, but it would be a very weak base that would most likely be very rare. Since strong acids are 100% ionized the conjugate base would not effect the pH because of the low amount.

Strong acids have conjugate bases but they are weak. This makes sense because the characteristic of a strong base is complete deprotonation therefore the conjugate base that is formed will not want to pick up protons.

Strong acids can have conjugate bases. A conjugate base is the strong acid after it has donated its proton.

Yes, a strong acid will have a conjugate base, however the stronger the acid, the weaker the conjugate base. This also applies for strong bases and their conjugate acid, the stronger the base, the weaker the conjugate acid.

Yes, strong acids do form conjugate bases. However, these bases are very, very weak (the stronger the acid, the weaker its conjugate base). Thus, it has very little effect on the the pH.

Agreeing with everyone else here, a strong acid can have a conjugate base, the key thing to note from everyone in this discussion is that the conjugate base will be much weaker than the acid. Thus, the trend is that a strong acid will have weak conjugate base.

Because all acids have conjugate bases, strong acids also have conjugate bases. However, the conjugate base will be very weak and barely dissociate. This means that not many OH- molecules will be in solution and its concentration is so negligible that the conjugate base won't affect the pH of the strong acid solution.

strong acids have weak conjugate bases, and weak acids have strong conjugate bases. Same principle applies to strong and weak bases

Strong acids can have weak conjugate bases. Weak acids cam have strong conjugate bases. A strong acid can dissociate almost 100 percent while a weak acid cannot. A weak acid uses Ka and a weak base uses the Kb constant.
