Buffer vs Equilibrium

Postby Val_Muench_2I » Sun Jan 23, 2022 9:49 am

I'm a bit confused about the difference between a buffer that has the same amounts of acid and conjugate base and a solution at equilibrium? Is it the same thing? Wouldn't that mean all solutions at equilibrium are buffers? I think I'm mixing up concepts and confusing myself so any help would be appreciated. Thank youuu

"Difference between a buffer that has the same amounts of acid and conjugate base and a solution at equilibrium?"

It is the same thing.

Most aqueous solutions reach equilibrium within minutes after mixing and stirring.

But only solutions with buffer components (compounds that can be H+ source and sink) can resist pH changes, and are therefore buffer solutions.
