pKa

How do you use the pKA values to determine the predominant species of a weak acid or a weak base in solution?

The predominant species of a weak acid or a weak base in solution is which part of a reaction is favored in an acid/based equilibrium. The pKa value lets you know the concentrations of the reactants and prodcuts at equlibrium, thus the higher concentration would be the predominant species. If the pKa is higher than your pH then the predominant species is a weak acid, if the pKa is lower than your pH then the predominant species is a weak base.

Hey, we can use the pka to determine if a reaction produces a strong conjugate base. weak acid= strong base. I hope this helps!

the higher the pKa, the lower the Ka, since pKa = -log(Ka). the lower the Ka, the weaker the acid, so the higher the pKA, the weaker the acid. to find species of a base using pKa, use pKa=14-pKb to solve for pKb to find the Kb using pKb = -log(Kb)

To determine the predominant species of a weak acid or base in solution using pKa values, compare the solution's pH to the pKa value: if the pH is lower than the pKa, the undissociated acid or protonated base predominates; if the pH is higher, the conjugate base or deprotonated acid is predominant.
