pKw trends

Postby Ken Woo 2D » Sat Dec 07, 2024 11:01 pm

During lecture, the professor stated that the pKw value for room temperature is 14. If so, does this mean that a pKw value can exist for any possible temperature that we can experimentally set up? If so, would the increasing/decreasing trend continue from, let's say, room temperature to absolute zero?

Hi ! Short answer, yes. pKw changes with temp bc waters ionization depends on thermal energy so technically you can define a pKw for any temp u can measure. But as you approach absolute zero, water freezes solid, and ionization basically stops, so the trend wouldnt really continue in a way that matters. Hope this helped !
