Ka and Kb on Final

Postby Sydni Stewart » Wed Dec 05, 2018 7:41 pm

In class, Lavelle mentioned we would not need to know equilibrium constants until 14b, so what exactly do we need to know in regards to what we've learned about Ka and Kb?

I am also very confused on this because todays lecture talked more about 14B rather than what we would need to learn in terms of this course.

I don't think we'll have to solve equilibrium constants on the final. On Outline 6 where it lists what we have to know for the final it doesn't say anything about equilibrium.

We will not need to know Ka and Kb values for the final. This will be covered in 14B. The only acids and bases calculations we will do is for pH.

We do not need to know these for the final. Just in case, I think it would be good to at least keep in mind that pKa is -log(Ka) and that the bigger the value of Ka is the stronger the acid.

Does this also mean the bigger the value of Kb the stronger the base?

Yes, the larger the value of Kb, the stronger the base.

Do we just need to understand the general concepts of Ka and Kb, but will not need to solve anything with them?

Yes, understand the concept but don't worry about equations having to do with them.
