Decide whether an aqueous solution of each of the follow- ing salts has a pH equal to, greater than, or less than 7.
e) AlCl3?
can someone explain why this is acidic and the chemical equation.

In class we discussed small metal cations not in group 1 and 2 (mainly transition metal cations) will act as acids in water. First they form coordinate covalent compounds with water molecules; these water molecules will then lose a proton to free floating water molecules, thus generating hydronium ions, making solution acidic. Water attached to Al3+ that lost proton becomes OH-, so Al3+ Becomes Al2+
