Question on Cations/Anions in Acids + Bases

Postby Ritika Prasad 1A » Tue Jan 26, 2021 6:56 pm

I was reviewing notes I had from lecture on Acids and Bases, and had written down that Dr. Lavelle said cations are usually more likely to act as an acid and anions as bases. I was wondering if someone could provide further clarification on this and how it applies to problems.

I usually think about it this way:

Cations are often the conjugate acids of bases - after accepting a proton, the base becomes positively charged.

Anions are often the conjugate bases of acids - after donating a proton, the acid becomes negatively charged.

Hope this helps!
