pOH and pKb

Postby Samantha Pedersen 2K » Thu Jan 28, 2021 9:09 pm

Is it correct to say that if the pOH < pKb, then the surroundings are more basic than the species so the surroundings will accept the H+ ion? Similarly, is it correct to say that if the pOH > pKb, then the species is more basic than its surroundings and the species will accept the H+ ion?

Yes! In Justin's workshop today, he told us to think about the pH as the surrounding, and the pKa as the species, and the same applies to pOH and pKb!

Thank you for posting this! I always get confused about species and surroundings when it comes to pOH and pKb and pH and pKa. This really helped!

That's correct!
