pKa2 values vs. pKa1 values

Can anyone explain why using exponentiation on a pKa2 value for an ion will still give you its Ka value?

If the Ka1 value is small enough that it is negligible, you can get an accurate Ka value by just considering Ka2 (or pKa2).
