Content on HW 2 Question 10: Predominant Species

Postby Leilani Arcega 2D » Sun Jan 29, 2023 10:03 pm

The question I am referring to is,

A weak base, B, is ionized forming its conjugate acid (BH+) according to the reaction
B(aq)+H2O(l)↽−−⇀BH+(aq)+OH−(aq)

The conjugate acid BH+ has a pKa=8.53.

For this weak base, the predominant species present at pH 6.69 is
-neutral
-unknown
-charged.

I don't particularly remember learning about this in lecture. Does anyone know where I can find information of this specific topic? Such as a chapter in the textbook?

Thank you.

Hello,
if you go to Lavelle's Chem 14B website (https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/class-websites/chem14b/), there is a PDF called "Concepts in titrations, buffers, etc." under learning outcomes. I found that pdf helpful when trying to understand the relationship between pH and pKa.
