Strong acids as buffers

Postby Ella Kim 3E » Wed Jan 31, 2024 8:19 pm

Why do strong acids not make good buffers? What is an example of a good buffer?

Hey, Ella.
Strong acids don't make for good buffers because they dissociate completely in a solution. In addition, the equilibrium is so far on the products side that it makes it unstable. A good buffer is one that contains equal concentrations of both an acid and its conjugate base. An example that demonstrates these qualities is acetic acid with sodium acetate.
I hope this helps!
