Effect of Temperature

Postby Emily Glaser 1F » Mon Dec 04, 2017 8:28 pm

Does the pH of pure water increase or decrease with increasing temperature?

With changing temperature, Kw changes. For example, with water, pH will always be the same as pOH, but with increasing temperature, both values decrease due to an increasing Kw value (this relationship is a result of pH and pOH having a -log relationship to Kw).

For clarity, the autoporalisis of H2O given for Kw is usually set at 25 degrees C, so if the temperature is to change, the equilibrium of the reaction will change as well to compensate

Kw = [H3O+][OH-] = 10^(-14)

the last post explains what happens, this is just the equation to supplement. hope it helps!
