The concentration of HCl in hydrochloric acid is reduced to 12% of its initial value by dilution. What is the difference in the pH values of the two solutions?

How do you figure out this problem?

Think about how you figure out pH values. What are pH values dependent on? pH values are dependent on the H+ concentration. Thus, if the H+ concentration is reduced, what happens to the pH?

The problem becomes a simple dimensional analysis problem when you remember that pH is just -log[H3O+] in mols of H3O+/Liter. Make sure to remember that since it's a log function, the greater the H3O+ concentration, the LOWER the pH will be.

How would we solve for the concentration? I am stuck as to how to even start.
