pKa, Ka, and relative acid strength

Postby Clarissa Cabil 1I » Wed Jan 23, 2019 3:34 pm

Just to clarify,

the larger the Ka, the stronger the acid

and

the lower the pKa, the stronger the acid?

Yes, you are right.

The larger the Ka, the stronger the acid. The smaller the pKa, the stronger the acid
And the same applies for bases, the larger the Kb, the stronger the base. The smaller the pKb, the stronger the base

You are correct!

I believe it is the same for bases; decreasing pKb and increasing Kb will correspond to increasing base strength.

An example of this concept can be found in 12.39 in the 6th edition.

You're right! Because pKa is the -log of Ka, when Ka is larger and the acid is stronger, pKa is decreased.
