Can someone please explain all the parts of the pH equation?

The pH equation is on a logarithmic scale and is -log[H+]
You basically find the negative log of the concentration of H+ in a solution to find the pH in a strong acid.

Wouldn't this work for any solution, essentially? Not just a strong acid? And if not, what different cases might we encounter?
